THE PRACTICAL QUAD

"The Liberating Love of God is Proclaimed through Field Preaching, Experienced in Micro-Communities, Embodied in Social Engagement, and Renewed by Leadership Activation." - CHRIS HECKERT
The Wesleyan Practical Quad: A Field Guide for Modern Ministry
While the traditional Wesleyan Quadrilateral (Scripture, Tradition, Reason, and Experience) serves as a vital theological baseline, the Practical Quad is your actionable "field guide" for ministry.
Developed in the book, Calling on Fire: Reclaiming the Method of Methodism by Ashley Boggan and Chris Heckert, this framework translates historical Methodist DNA into real-world strategies. It is designed to help contemporary faith communities break out of their comfort zones, shift from institutional maintenance to spiritual revival, and meet a hurting world exactly where it is.
The Four Interconnected Pillars

1. Field Preaching
Taking the message of God’s unconditional love outside the church walls.
-
Originally: Circuit-riding preachers traveling to the public square.
-
Today: Reaching new people where they already gather—via videos, podcasts, social media, or creative in-person spaces.

3. Social Engagement
Engaging the hurts of the world by seeking justice, serving others, and standing with the marginalized.
-
Originally: Visiting the sick/imprisoned, feeding the hungry, and providing education.
-
Today: The exact same mission—combining immediate relief with systemic justice advocacy.

2. Micro-Communities
Fostering deep spiritual formation and mutual accountability in small groups.
-
Originally: Methodist Class Meetings and Societies.
-
Today: Small groups (like Grace Groups) where people share their faith journeys.
-

4. Leadership Activation
Equipping and empowering everyday disciples—not just clergy—to spark transformation.
-
Originally: Tapping laypeople to run the movement's vital operations.
-
Today: Identifying potential in ordinary people, investing in them, and setting them loose to lead.
